Howard Terpning art prints

Born in Oak Park, Illinois and receiving his art education at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the American Academy of Art, Howard Terpning became one of the best known and financially successful members of the Cowboy Artists of America.
Known as "the storyteller of the Native American people", Howard Terpning is perhaps the finest artist of Plains Indian history. Terpning's beautiful art, prints and posters get straight to heart of the feelings of those he portrays. His clear palette and accuracy of detail record events and rituals as they actually were. You'll taste the dust kicked up by galloping horses, smell the smoke from the fire or feel the chill of a winter's day. Preserving historical events in art, prints and posters allows the viewer to become a part of the past. Bringing to life the events of everyday life among the Native Americans, Terpning leaves us with a respect for the Native Americans and a desire to learn more.

After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in China, Terping studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art University. After work in Chicago and Milwaukee, Terpning came to New York City where he drew for such magazines as Time magazine, Newsweek, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, and Readers Digest.
Beginning with The Guns of Navarone in 1961 he became a prolific film poster artist for such films as Cleopatra, Doctor Zhivago, The Sound of Music and many others. In 1967 Terpning went to the Vietnam war to paint for the U.S. Marine Corps. Six of his paintings hang in the National Museum of the Marine Corps. In the early 1970's Terpning reduced his commercial work and gradually began painting Western scenes and painting of Native Americans eventually moving to Arizona to do it full time in 1976.
A 26 August 2007 New York Times article called Terpning "the most famous American artist you never heard of".
Awards
He has been honored with an award from the Autry National Center 2005 Masters of the American West Thomas Moran Memorial Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Autry Center.
Terpning has also received the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art Award for Excellence.
